Physical exercise & lifestyle changes
Why do I need to be physically active?
Physical activity can be enjoyable and can help you:
- feel good
- lose weight
- lower your blood glucose levels
- improve your muscle tone & heart function
- increases tissue sensitivity to insulin
You may want to:
- a brisk walk,
- take the stairs instead of the lift,
- get off the bus a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way,
- use a bicycle or walk instead of the using the car for short journeys, or
- join a physical activity group.
Current recommendations are to be active at a level that increases your breathing rate and makes you feel warmer, for 30 minutes a day, five or more times a week, this intensity and amount will promote good health. Always ensure suitable footwear is used.
Most people are safe to do physical activity. If you are concerned or have certain health conditions such as heart disease or asthma, please consult your GP before undertaking physical activity.
